Most Hunt County homes should have their septic tank pumped every 3 to 5 years. Aerobic systems still need the trash tank pumped on the same interval even though they get serviced three times a year. Homes with one or two people or an oversized tank can stretch to 7 years. Homes with five or more people, a garbage disposal, or a small tank should pump every 2 to 3 years.
The real answer depends on 4 things
Tank size, household size, water use habits, and whether the system is conventional or aerobic. The old rule of thumb of every 3 to 5 years is a starting point, not a law.
A smaller tank serving a busy family of four who do average laundry and cook at home will fill the sludge layer in 3 to 4 years. That same tank serving two retirees will take twice as long. A larger tank serving those same four people can go 5 to 7 years.
How do I know my specific interval?
Measure it. A pumper with a sludge judge (a long clear tube) can drop into your tank and tell you exactly how much solid is built up. Once the sludge reaches about a third of the tank depth, it is time.
If nobody has ever measured your tank, the safe move is to pump it once, note the date, and reassess in 3 years. Much cheaper than replacing a drain field that got clogged with escaped solids.
Aerobic systems are different
Aerobic systems have two chambers: the trash tank (which behaves like a conventional septic tank) and the treatment chamber. The trash tank still needs to be pumped, usually on the same 3 to 5 year interval.

What happens if I wait too long?
Solids escape into the drain field or spray field. Once that happens, the field starts to fail — and replacing a drain field is the biggest repair on the menu. Pumping a tank is one of the cheapest routine services you can buy. The math is not close.
The other symptom of an overdue tank is slow drains, gurgling toilets, and eventually backups in the lowest fixtures in the house. If you are getting any of those, stop reading and call somebody today.
